“I object to violence because when it appears to do good, the good is only temporary; the evil it does is permanent.”
— Mohandas K. Gandhi
“The tragedy of war is that it uses man’s best to do man’s worst.”
Henry Fosdick
“Peace starts with a smile”
Mother Teresa
“Peace is our gift to each other.”
— Elie Wiesel
“Mankind must put an end to war, or war will put an end to mankind…War will exist until that distant day when the conscientious objector enjoys the same reputation and prestige that the warrior does today.”
— John F. Kennedy
“War is as outmoded as cannibalism, chattel slavery, blood-feuds, and dueling, an insult to God and humanity…a daily crucifixion of Christ.”
Muriel Lester
“Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime”
Ernest Hemingway
“More than an end to war, we want an end to the beginning of all wars — yes, an end to this brutal, inhuman and thoroughly impractical method of settling the differences between governments.”
— Franklin D. Roosevelt.
“I like to believe that people in the long run are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it.”
Dwight D. Eisenhower
“The best way to destroy an enemy is to make him a friend.”
— Abraham Lincoln
“There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.”
— A.J. Muste.
“I would say that I’m a nonviolent soldier. In place of weapons of violence, you have to use your mind, your heart, your sense of humor, every faculty available to you…because no one has the right to take the life of another human being.”
Joan Baez
“Imagine all the people living life in peace.
You may say I’m a dreamer,
but I’m not the only one.
I hope someday you’ll join us,
and the world will be as one.”
— John Lennon
“If humanity is to progress, Gandhi is inescapable. he lived, thought, and acted, inspired by the vision of humanity evolving toward a world of peace and harmony. We may ignore him at our own risk”.
Martin Luther King, Jr.
“One of the most persistent ambiguities that we face is that everybody talks about peace as a goal. However, it does not take sharpest-eyed sophistication to discern that while everybody talks about peace, peace has become practically nobodys’ business among the power-wielders. Many men cry Peace! Peace! but they refuse to do the things that make for peace.”
Martin Luther King,Jr.
Non-cooperation with evil is a sacred duty.
Mahatma Gandhi
“Whether humanity will consciously follow the law of love, I do not know. But that need not disturb me. The law will work just as the law of gravitation works, whether we accept it or not. The person who discovered the law of love was a far greater scientist than any of our modern scientists. Only our explorations have not gone far enough and so it is not possible for everyone to see all its workings.”
Mahatma Gandhi
“The Holy Prophet Mohammed came into this world and taught us: ‘That man is a Muslim who never hurts anyone by word or deed, but who works for the benefit and happiness of God’s creatures. Belief in God is to love one’s fellow men.'”
Abdul Ghaffar Khan
“The essence of nonviolence is love. Out of love and the willingness to act selflessly, strategies, tactics, and techniques for a nonviolent struggle arise naturally. Nonviolence is not a dogma; it is a process.”
Thich Nhat Hanh
“If we just worry about the big picture, we are powerless. So my secret is to start right away doing whatever little work I can do. I try to give joy to one person in the morning, and remove the suffering of one person in the afternoon. If you and your friends do not despise the small work, a million people will remove a lot of suffering. That is the secret. Start right now.”
Sister Chän Khöng
“We, the peoples of the United Nations, determined to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war, which twice in our lifetime has brought untold sorrow to mankind, and to reaffirm faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal right of men and women and of nations large and small….And for these ends to practice tolerance and live together in peace with one another as good neighbors…have resolved to combine our efforts to accomplish these aims.”
Preamble, Charter of the United Nations.
Hey,
I really dig on those quotes.
It of coarse made me conjour up some of my favorite Bible passages about peace. So I looked on Biblegateway.com to search for the text reference and 246 verses came up under the word “peace”.
Some were of Kings and commoners alike crying out for peace. Some were greeting each other with a kiss of peace. Some were looking to currupt the peace. Of these couple of hundred verses, I narrowed my likings down to about 100. and of those i managed to chose only 8 (just happend to work out to be 4 Old Testament and 4 of the New Testament.
They mean a whole lot of LOVE to me.
As one who grapples for inner peace combating the forces of anxiety and depression…well, one can easily become desenitized or jaded, not sure what word i am reaching for. But peace can easily lose it’s signifigance. I have no option other than to reflect, research, and redefine what it means to me.
I can admit to be one of these people not sure how to “feel” about the war. Freedom for others!?! how could we not take a stand evenif it mean war, right?
But then I am gently a guiding Spirit leads me and reminded in the Word….
Matthew 5:9
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.
Surely, God has a plan that we must trust. But surely He desires peace for ALL of us as well.
Anyway, thanks for the thoughts and inspirations.
Maybe this too may be of encouragemnt to you.
Peace and love, your sister, Rachel
Psalm 85:10
Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other.

Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.
Isaiah 55:12
You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.
Isaiah 57:19
creating praise on the lips of the mourners in Israel. Peace, peace, to those far and near,” says the LORD. “And I will heal them.”
Galatians 5:22
But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,
Philippians 4:7
And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
John 14:27
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Comment by PodcastForPeace 08.19.05 @ 12:52 pmThanks for this show–it is inspiring and timely. I am reminded of Caroline Casey–she also weaves astrology and current events with humor and artful language in a way that the layman can understand the astrological context. This is centering work and much appreciated.
